For the final Bachelor's Project of my Communication Design studies at HTW Berlin, I explored the idea of designing typefaces systematically. In the theoretical part of the essay, I delved into Karl Gerstner's programmatic approach to design, the development of Concrete Art, and the idea of designing systems with rules and constraints rather than aiming directly for a final product.
Starting from the premise that the need for flexibility in design is increasing and gaining popularity. I aim to focus on creating an experimental "systematic" display typeface in the practical part of my work. With the idea of designing a typeface that broke away from concrete proportions and could adopt various modular forms, the initial designs were made. Pixel fonts, grids, and matrix systems were explored and used as references
The goal is to develop programs that enable the flexibility of typefaces regardless of format. It's also about exploring how these programs should look to make typefaces interactive, always with the aim of forming a flexible or modular visual identity.
